I'm with Porksoda on the tires and gear change if you have put oversized tires on it. I think most 1997 models came out with a 225/---/15 tire and a 4.11 gear ratio on a 4 cylinder model. Anything bigger on tire size will greatly reduce power. A fairly cheap power gainer would be to put an electric fan in place of the belt driven clutch fan. A radiator fan pulls more power than most people realize and this is a cheap fix, and can also be wired on a switch to be turned off for water crossings. Changing gears would be best but it is expensive and will affect gas mileage.

Do you have over-sized tires on it? If so, then you NEED to re gear your axles. A 4 cyl Jeep isn't that bad. They'll do 75 all day. Wouldn't do a supercharger. I'd sell it 1st and buy a 4.0 Jeep instead.

If I had a 4 cylinder Jeep I'd add:

AEM cold air kit (drive through what ever you want)
Dynomax exhaust w/high flow cat & 2.5 pipe
Thorley or Banks header
Centerforce clutch
8mm wires & a demon ignition coil

Good luck

the easiest and prob. cheapest way to get more power would be to put on a high flow catalytic converter and to open up your exhaust by putting on a cat back exhaust. this should help. other than that I would say a bigger fuel injector and possibly put a blower on your engine. My friend has done all of this and you would not believe how fast that little four banger goes.

Cheapest way is to sell it and buy one with a bigger engine.
