I have understood it to mean the life principle. It is that which makes any agglomeration of matter intoa living being, animal or vegetable!
The diference and discussion revolves around the type of soul. More particularly those of the animal kingdom.
All animals have souls. What happens to the souls after death is the debatable issue.
Immortal souls continue to exist after the body has departed. Mortal souls desist at the time of death.
Now the debate is who has got which ?
What happens to the immortal soul at death ?
Maybe most important is there anything we can do about where the immortal soul goes?
Does religion have anything to do with any of this ?---This part I can say a definite yes----religions try to define all these things !

In Christianity I think it is the place where God's Spirit dwells within a person if they follow Jesus. Conversely, without him, the soul is the empty spiritual void within. The English word 'soul' can be used to translate the Syriac word nafsha which is derived from the root word, nfash = 'to breath', or 'to be alive'

Soul is the Spirit that makes up who you are. The body is just the parts working together so that you have a vessel for our time on this earth. The physical body eventually dies and releases the Spirit to where is determined by our Lord, if we accepted Him ( Jesus ) as our Lord and Savior.

Human beings have a spirit, a soul and live in a BODY.
The soul is the MIND part of your spirit.
In other words, what you REASON with.

Whatever you want it to mean.
It is impossible to really define.
It's metaphysical.
Some people think it is contained in the mind, some think it is contained in the whole body, others think it follows the body around.
It is a guide, your essence, a great power inside you, your true self.
It is unchangeable and eternal.
