She must've weighed at least 50 lbs and had hip dysplasia (AT AGE 2)... but did she miss out on the giant gene or something? She looked like a Newf, only smaller. I was SURE she was a puppy.

I haven't seen a quality Newf in person, no... so you got me there. I figured it wasn't just one gene, but have my doubts about her being purebred. I've looked at the standard since then, and have more doubts. The only other (possibly) quality Newfoundland I've seen was a puppy, so it's a little hard to compare for me. Thanks!

There's no doubt in my mind that she was poorly bred - HD at age 2, for crying out loud! Thanks everyone. :)

Oh, I have seen some that look quite like that!!!!!!!! There are a few "mills" that were breeding them smaller and smaller....probably for the sake of space. There were some taken from a kennel setting in IL that were all about 50-75 pounds. They were of course HIDEOUS. Breeding too close *heavy inbreeding* seemed to have played a part in it also. They all had skeletal deformaties, but that may have been due, in part, to the awful conditions that they were living in.
This was not the first case like this that we have seen, but the largest. Over the years there have been several, but often, the dogs are presumed to be mixes. Some are, but from what we have seen...some are NOT!!!! The early age HD is a clue. In my opinion, that kind of lends to the fact that this could be a Newf....but one that was bred from such horrid stock that the health issues as well as the size were factors. Generally, the mixes we have seen did not have the really bad health issues that the badly bred Newfs did.
Still a sad case. Over the years I have seen sooo many really bad looking ones. It is amazing!!!!!! I am sure people see it in other breeds as well, but it is always a shocker to see ones that are so extreme.
Vet Tech....(forgive me) but that Newf that you have the link to could not have been ANY more sculpted if it tried!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT is what this breed has come to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can we NOT show in natural coat anymore??????
Thank the loving lord!!! I was hoping you were not a "sculpting fanatic"!!!!!!!!!!!!
7.5 YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I guess it does NOT suprise me that much....VERY sad!!!!!!! There is more and more things I cannot STABD going on!!! One breeder bred a male she has (to her OWN bit ch) and he did not clear hips OR elbows!!!!! Like it is better that it was on HER bit ch???? Is she going to keep ALL the puppies??? DOUBT it!!!! I really don't know where to reffer puppy people to anymore!!! A breeder near me has 34 PUPPIES right now!!! I about stroked out when I heard that!!!!!!!

Hi!!
I highly doubt she was purebred being at 2 years she was only 50 pounds. My female Newfoundland is a little over a year and over 120 pounds. The smallest full grown female I have ever met was 100 pounds (double the size of the Newf you saw).
Here is what a proper female Newf should look like: http://www.tempestnewfoundlands.com/andie.html
ADD: Lovin' Lanseers... I agree!!! You are completely right! I was hoping to show off the actual appropriate structure and body shape, that is why I chose that picture :) OH and did you see my post to you under the recent question regarding what age is too old for breeding? Check that out.
ADD2: The breeder who bred their b*tch at 7.5 years I no longer refer to... it was L.S. (I abbreviated) if you catch my drift. I lost all respect for John... he actually bragged about breeding her and then went on to say how hard it was on her. I was SO mad.

It is very unlikely the dog is purebred unless of course her owner is straving her. A Newfie that age should be over 100 pounds and about 26".
Here is what the standard says:
Size, Proportion, Substance
Average height for adult dogs is 28 inches, for adult bitches, 26 inches. Approximate weight of adult dogs ranges from 130 to 150 pounds, adult bitches from 100 to 120 pounds. The dog's appearance is more massive throughout than the *****'s. Large size is desirable, but never at the expense of balance, structure, and correct gait. The Newfoundland is slightly longer than tall when measured from the point of shoulder to point of buttocks and from withers to ground. He is a dog of considerable substance which is determined by spring of rib, strong muscle, and heavy bone.

If you ever saw a quality Newf you wouldn't be asking this question. Yours is either a poorly bred or mixed bred dog.

Most big breeds don't stop maturing until around 3/4 but she most likely wasn't a purebred if she weighed only 50lbs at 2 yrs old.... Or she wsa really neglected...

she is not purebred unless she has papers, because you cannot prove it. It sounds like somevery unscrupulous person bred her parents for her to be sick. LOVE her, please don't breed her!
