Your credit card company marks your credit card as "lost or stolen" just because you are using it in a different town than you live, resulting in you being denied use of your card in front of your associates?

Bank of America does this ALL THE TIME and it's starting to really PISS ME OFF! Hello! I travel and I use a credit card when I do so. Also, most theives are not going to use the card to buy $20 meal and small purchase of gas -- they're going to make a HUGE purchase (or ATM) and then ditch the cards.

Anyone else experienced this BS from BOA?

They did it to me and my husband while vacationing in another country, he purchased a lovely emeral ring for me and the vendors tracked us down a few hours later, angry because the charge was rejected, we called the company and explained our whereabouts and they promised not to do it again but we still worried and did not use the card again, I would suggest trying a different company.

If you call ahead of time and let them know you'll be traveling out of town and to put the charges through, there shouldn't be a problem. It happens all the time. If they aren't aware that you are traveling often, it does look really suspicious to see charges from all over the country. They put a stop to the card because if it really is fraudulent use, they are responsible after a certain point and are trying to limit their losses.

And, yes, if someone steals a credit card, the first stop is usually a self service gas station. They use the card there because they can immediately tell if it's already been reported as lost/stolen. If the charge goes through, they know it's not reported and go on to make a large charge. If its denied and the message comes up to go inside, they just take off knowing the card is no longer valid.

With all the fraud these days, many cards do things like this. Call them and explain your situation, ask them to automatically accept out of town charges. If they won't, call before each trip and let them know where you expect to make purchases. The only other alternative is to get a card through a different bank.

I've never had a credit card do that to me.

On one hand it seems that BOA is trying to prevent fraud but maybe they just have too strict a standard on your card. Have you contacted BOA to see what can be done to stop the problem? If they can't fix it, find another credit card.

If you have made your payments regularly, you will be able to get another card from a bank that is aware that people travel.
