That's how variations in names and surnames come about. I think once done, that's it. Only a court could change it or the name would have to be changed by deed poll through a solicitor.

1) Where was your son born?
2) Did you spell it correctly on the forms & they mis spelled ?
OR
3) You wrote it wrongly & realise your mistake once the certificate was issued?
If your son was born in UK then per (2) contact the British Embassy in USA or any Registrar of births to correct it.
If yor son was born in USA then only Embassy can fix it.
If you wrote it wrongly on forms & realised ur mistake then only way to change it is by deed poll.

I would contact the nearest UK Consulate and ask for assistance. US birth certificates handled out side the country are handled by US ones, so there is a chance the UK Consulate maybe able to help you. Or at least refer you to the correct location to handle it.
