Maybe the clerk meant to say "357 Magnum" rather than 347, but I really don't understand why anyone would recommend a 357 magnum as a first firearm for a 13 year old for hunting purposes. You would need to give us a little more information in order for us to help you.....

Well what are you hunting? If you are going after deer, I'd go with a 223. It's a good caliber and depending on the gun can be lighter and easier for a kid to carry. I killed my first buck with one when I was 14. If you are going for elk, try a 7mm 08. This also works great for deer, so if hunting both, just go with the 7mm 08. They make it in a smaller gun now kinda a kid's gun. I carry one when I go elk hunting. Not extremely high powered and doesn't have the quite the distance of other guns that would be good for elk, like a 300 mag, but does a good job. If you are inexperienced you shouldn't be trying to long of distance shots. If you are going after small game, like rabbits, use a .22 for slightly bigger animals, like for going coyote calling use a 223. Don't be using the bigger guns on too small of game. I was out deer hunting and found a bob cat and I shot it with my 7mm. It blew that thing up pretty bad...
I shot my antelope with a 243 and it put a huge hole through it too. I probably needed a smaller caliber...
But really it all depends on what you are hunting for the kind of gun you'll need.Go back and talk to the guy at the gun shop or to someone you know who is an experienced hunter. And whatever you do, never go hunting alone!

First off, what are you hunting? Second are you looking for a rifle or shotgun. If you can answer these questions for me I might be able to steer you in the right general direction.
I know in the state in which I live the smallest caliber rifle you can use for deer is a .257. Are whitetail the only large game animal you plan on hunting? Also in what type of terrain will you be hunting, brush, old growth forest, open fields?
If you only plan on deer hunting the .257 will be enough gun, but if you want to go after something bigger and tougher like elk you Willl need a larger caliber. As far as terrain goes in brush you wil want a heavier bullet and on fields you will want one with more down range impact power.
Personally I use a .308 Winchester and it has served me well in all conditions I have hunted so far. Whatever you choose good luck and enjoy the excitement of the outdoors.

A very good rifle for you to start with would probably a rifle in a .243 caliber. This rifle is sufficient to knock down deer but yet does not have a lot of recoil.

Join the National Rifle Association and use their info. on-line to gain access to books and videos on the subject. Also subscribe to Buckmasters and spend a short while learning about this fasinating sport. If you investigate joining a rifle club in your area and make your interest in hunting known, their will be many people willing to help you get started, test various rifles and welcome you into the fold of shooter/hunter. Best of luck my young friend.

Yeah what are you hunting and where do you live because the firearms you are aloud to use varies by state. I live in ohio and in ohio you cant use high powered rifels, but if you live in Texas you can. I need to know where you live and what you are hunting to help you just like the other guy before me.
