No. The second generation Dodge Ram 4x4's have a center axle disconnect that prevents the drive shaft from rotating. The center axle disconnect is on the passenger side and slides a collar back and forth to connect the passenger side axle. When disconnected the axles just spin. The drivers side axle spins the spider gears in the differential and consequently the disconnected half of the passenger side axle. The ring gear and drive shaft dont spin though.

3rd gens with a solid front axle dont have a disconnect and the drive shaft turns all the time.

1st gens have lockout hubs so the driveshaft wont spin if the hubs are unlocked.

Only the outer shafts rotate in 2wd then when you shift into 4wd everything rotates.

no it doesn't,it they only rotate when its engaged in 4 wheel drive,they automatically lock in when you select 4 wheel drive,and will kick out when taken out of 4 wheel drive,good luck.
