I think most people react badly to sarcasm. it is a type of humour intended to wound. Irony is closely related and is intended to be shared. The dividing line is variable and very narrow.

Speaking of sarcasm: Grammatically in the English language it is impossible to create a negative statement by using a double negative. The statement created with the double negative inverts and becomes a positive statement, i.e. "I can't get no satisfaction" really means "I can get satisfaction" because the negatives cancel each other out. Classic sarcasm is (only since the late 70's) finding whether the opposite is true: Can two positives make a negative? Yeah, right! Get it?

Sarcasm and humor to laugh at ones self is a true Australian custom, pity your friend didn't have a sence of humor. Just give him a call and tell him or her to get over it. Merry Christmas Mate from Australia !

Salim Sarcasmo invented it in 1126. It didn't catch on to any great degree until the 20th century.
