I have had this desktop computer with Windows Vista for 2 months, and it just keeps freezing up. When I go into my email and then go to a different screen or anything, it just freezes and then the only way I can turn it off is by holding down the power button on the tower. What can I do to stop this from happening?

Someone suggested that I run a virus scan. I already have Norton, but this person said that I should do it on some website that will remove the "adware" or whatever might be slowing it down. Think this will work? If so, suggestions on the site?

Thank you in advance!!!

Vista is great. It's just that when you get it,for some reason it isn't set-up right.Do a factory restore[not system restore].It works great after that, and quickly too.The screen resolution is amazing. And there's patches for the minor glitches now.Windows update will install them after you factory restore.Vista is much better than XP.

Did you buy a computer which had Windows Vista already installed or did you do an upgrade from Windows XP to Windows Vista? If it was already preinstalled, you shouldn't have any problems. Problems like yours usually show up during an upgrade of the Windows operating system. I agree with many people who have already answered your question. Windows Vista has very high hardware requirements. It sounds like you don't have enough RAM installed on your computer. I don't think your computer is infected with a virus or any other malicious file. Try this, decrease the number of programs you have loaded at any given time. I would suggest turning off Norton Security temporarily. Next, use your computer normally. Has the problem disappeared? I suggest turning off Norton because it is notorious for hogging up computer resources like RAM and CPU cycles. Many Norton users have complained that once they installed Norton, their computers turned from a lightning fast computer to a Windows 95 dinosaur.

You know! I have windows Vista also, I've had it since, July
2007, and it does the very same thing, I have ran scans to
detect viruses, by the security system that comes with the
IP which is Mc Afee, and there are no Viruses or anything of
the sort, I was told by Best Buy that the mouse sometimes
and Key Board could be a factor in freezing up.
Be a little careful with web sites that offer free scans, .
Consult with Windows Vista web site for Help.

Are you getting any on screen error messages? If so, post them and we can help you.It is possible that you have a hardware problem with faulty memory being a candidate. Go to f8 and run hardware diagnostics. Ignore the dvd error message that you will get, that is because you have to read and write to recordable dvds. Just ignore it. It is more likely that you have a software problem, usually caused by downloading bad junk off P2P. Free music isn't free if it causes your system to be slow or to crash. Back up good data, do NOT back up anything fomr a P2P network. You can do a restore to a known good system by clicking f8 at start up, choose repair my computer, choose kb, enter password Then choose return to dell factory image. WATCH OUT WHAT YOU DOWNLOAD. 1G is very little to run vista, I would upgrade, but that's not whats causing crashes.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

You need more ram as much as you can afford, and if your running any filesharing program that will slow your machine down and cause hangs. Vista is not that bad with the extra memory.
