We weren't planning on purchasing a gift for our neighbors. For one, it wasn't in our budget and two, we don't really care for them that much. We are nice to them and we talk to them, but they haven't been the nicest neighbors and we just talk in passing. They brought over a small gift yesterday for our family and now I'm wondering if have to go out and find something for them since they gave us a gift?

I hope people don't give gifts just expecting one in return (*sigh* well I guess that does happen).

My rule has always been not to add anyone at the last minute. If I have some extra baked goods around I usually do give something like that but I don't go out and buy gifts for people who were not on my list.

Just remember to do a nice thank you card and consider them next year.

No, but I'd write a nice thank you note and remember to get them something next year.
I always try to keep a few generic gifts in the house just so I'm prepared to give something in return for an unexpected gift. I mostly buy wine or fancy food items; that way I can happily use anything left over.

You don't have to purchase them a gift but you do have to thank them. Maybe a little tray of Christmas cookies with your thank you would be a nice gesture.

Absolutely not, but you should at least thank them. You are not obligated to purchase anyone a gift at all.

Yes, give them a similarly priced gift.

It wouldn't be a gift if you have to repay the favor. Would it?
