A box spring will support the mattress on the bed frame. Think of it as a big sandwich

comforter or quilt

flat sheet

fitted sheet

mattress

bed skirt

box spring

bed frame

If you use a platform you don't need a boxspring. Else you have the frame, boxspring and mattress.

To "make" the bed: Bed skirt goes over the boxspring to hide it (hangs to the floor) Mattress pad to protect the mattress; fitted sheet goes under you, flat sheet goes over you, pillow cases go on pillows. Quilt (or comforter or duvet) on top. You may have pillow shams to match the comforter.

If you are on a budget, you could forgo the skirt and shams or buy a "bed in a bag" which may have everything bit the mattress pad. Read the labels carefully because some only have the comforter and shams.
