I'm looking for religious answers only, please. (By "religious" mean all people holding religious beliefs - Wiccan, Jew, Christian, Muslim, etc.)

I believe that there are spiritual entities that take an interest in people. Some can be harmful, but most are helpful. They tend to be most attracted to people who do energy work (e.g.: healers).

It would not be unusual for a small, weak, benign spiritual entity to be attracted to a child. Such an entity would be harmless, but would not be strong enough to provide any protection.

In order for a strong spiritual entity to be attracted to a child, the child would have to be very unusual. For example, a child with a strong healing talent who seemed likely to develop and use that talent later on.

Yep, Guardian Angels. Not only kids. They look after everyone who live righteously.
