I'm trying to hook the tv up to a stereo for cheap added sound. The only output on the TV is a single digital audio output. Then the stereo has a red and white RCA input. Would a single -Y- RCA cable split to two cables work? Would that carry the signal to both left and right speakers, or none at all?

You would have to replace your audio system with something that has an optical input to use the optical output, however if the TV doesn't seem to have the analog audio outputs (Red and White outputs) search the TV for a headphone jack instead. If it has that then you can connect the headphone jack to the inputs on the stereo using a mini to RCA cable. You will have to have the volume on the TV up though because that output will be variable meaning its output strength should match the TVs volume.

I'm sure there must be an analog output u can use.
then a cable with RCA plugs on both ends.
anything else will just convert it back to analog - for what purpose?
