I'm getting my first tattoo filled in with color tonight. I had the outline done last night and the pain was unbareable, I cried it hurt so bad. I was wondering if anyone who has gotten a tattoo, or knows of someone who has gotten a tattoo, and used the numbing gel made specificaly for tattoos. Did the gel help at all?

This is my tattoo:

I would have just gotten the color and outline all done at the same time instead of two visits that way you wouldn't have had this time to build up your fear of the pain you already experianced. Tattoos are painful, bottom line. Nothing you put on is going to make it painfree or anything. It is like that crap used to numb the skin when waxing, don't really work you still feel it.

Personally though I found my outline hurt a whole lot more than coloring. I found the color to be more of an annoyance then the repetative burning feeling I had from the outline.

I never used the numbing gel. I found that when he would spray it to wipe away blood and ink while doing the tattoo it felt wicked, such a relief.

The numbing gel only works on broken skin. You should have had it applied right after the outlining was done, then waited two minutes and had it cleaned off and then filled in. THEN it works. It maybe needs to be repeated once down the road a bit.

We all have very light touches in our studio so no one EVER complains about the line work hurting much.

The gel will work a little, but tattoos are pain. You gotta deal with it to get it done, and generally outline work is more painful than shading. Just know that it is moments of pain compared to a lifetime of beauty <3

I had the numbing stuff after the outline was put on. Yes, it still hurt but it didn't hurt "as bad". The numbing stuff was only put on before the color.

Another thing... is the white and black color didn't stick to me very well. I blame it on the numbing stuff. I went back to get it re-touched up and didn't use the numbing stuff and it was just fine.

i dont think it works. youre getting needles poked into you hundreds of times. but im sure if you got through the outlining, youll be fine. black is the densest color ink and for the outlining they use a finer needle. the rest is a cinch. the lighter colors and wider needles wont be as painful. i just got mine done 2 weeks ago(and its very similar to yours, its a fairy) and after the outlining was done, it was alot easier.

Getting a tattoo is a right of passage, if you can't take the pain then you don't deserve one.
