I have always heard that it is dangerous to do so, because the mother will be too over protective and she might bite you. True? Not true?

Not if it is your own dog and you have a good relationship with the dog. I have never had any issue handling my pups from the second they emerged and occassionally before! My b*tch is completely comfortable with anything I do and would never consider biting me, ever. I wouldn't be foolish enough to go up to a strange dog or allow someone strange around my dog at anytime after they whelped as they are protective -- and I am protective of them. I have heard of people getting bitten by b*tches with litters but that is usually some idiot that allowed a stranger in with their litter or someone who didn't have a clue what they were doing and didn't have a very good relationship with their dog to begin with... usually bygers. Most conscientious breeders I know have not trouble at all touching and caring for the puppies from the moment they are born - but they know what they are doing too and many/most people who make litters just don't have a clue and deserve being bitten...

That would have to do entirely with the kind of relationship u have with the dog. If u do not know the dog and the dog does not know u, then yes, it is dangerous because she does not trust u enough. If u have a very good relationship with ur dog and ur dog has not shown any signs of possesion aggresion, then it may not be dangerous at all.
Two of my dogs had litters and I had good relationships with both dogs. I was allowed to pick them up and touch them with no prob.

I would still be carefull though.

If you have a dog that will bite you if you touch her puppies... Then you have an aggressive / fearful dog that NEVER should have been bred.. If you have a dog with good temperament, she will never bite you when you touch her puppies.. We are talking your own dog here.. If you are a stranger going around touching the puppies of a dog that you do not own or know, you might just get bit if she is wary enough of you and if they are very young.. But your own dog, should NEVER be aggressive towards you or bite you merely for touching her puppies. Never had a ***** even give me the face for touching her puppies.. Just would not happen.

Well it really depends on the mother if you are in danger of being bit or not. If she's not a biter normally, then I wouldnt worry about it. No, It doesnt hurt to touch or handle the puppies when they are being born. Ive helped some of my females when they sometimes needed help. And no, they wont disown them!

yes, some mothers are very protective and might bite. The best mothers are relaxed and trust their owners. Those don't seem to mind if you spend time with the puppies, if you keep them right there where she can watch. They usually get less protective as the puppies get older.

Depends on the dog and how protective they are. My puppies i helped deliver and handled them as soon as they popped out. None of my dogs have ever tried to bite me. They would just look concerned as to what i was doing with their puppy.

It all depends on the mother. If she is very protective you will know because she will growl at you if you get too close. But most bitches will not mind at all if you touch or pick up their puppies. But, she will worry over the puppy you pick up and watch it closely until it is back safe with her. It is not dangerous to the mother or to the puppy, unless you are too rough with the puppy, make the puppy too cold, or keep it form its mother for too long. It is best to leave newborn pups alone with their mother for the first week at least.

If the dog is comfortable with you and trusts you, then there is no reason that she wouldn't trust you with her pups. But if she doesn't know you then she may act protectively and that could be dangerous.
If it were MY dog, I wouldn't hesitate getting right in there and handling the pups, but I would never do that with a dog I didn't know was completely comfortable with me.

If you are over at my house and you try to handle the pups you won't need to worry about the mother biting you,,,, because I will.
If I am over at your house you have no need to worry about me handling your pups without permission or at all if they are newborns.
I handle MY pups when they are born and every day thereafter. I hope you do to.
If I had a dog that would bite if I handled it's pups it would never have a pup to handle.
