I surprisingly worked with dogs for a long time and knew a lot about feeding etc.
I have a basset/daschund/lab mix. Hes about 33 lbs.
Hes 12 years old and we feed him once a day, 2 cups of dry food and 1 package of the Moist & Meaty stuff.
Is that okay?
Everyone says hes old and we should feed him, but I dont want him to get too fat with his little tiny legs haha.

I always feed my dog twice a day and since we live in the south, I check her water constantly. She gets very hot and drinks a lot of water.

If 33lbs is his ideal weight, feed him the amount recommended on the packet for that weight. If he's old, he should be on a senior type of dogfood.

No one can say 'just give him 2 cups and one package' or whatever, because it depends what brand you're giving him! They're all different, you have to follow the guide on the packet/tin. If he won't eat as much as it recommends, fine so long as he's not getting skinny. If you're not sure if your dog is the right weight, consult a vet. Your dog is old and should be getting vet checks at least yearly to ensure problems are caught early.

You're right about not wanting him to get fat - this is very bad for adults and people. If the dog was fat he wouldn't have such a long life, so keep him trim and help him avoid problems.

Can you see an indentation between his ribcage and hips? Can you feel his ribcage? If not he's prob over weight, and you are wise to be concerend, especially with an older dog.

You didn't say what dry food you feed, but I was not thrilled by the one you mentioned (artificial coloring and by products).

And, it would be better to feed him 2x a day.

that is just fine for your dog because even though he is getting old does not mean that you should feed him more because he is probably at the age where he does not need to get fat because like you said he does have small legs because if you get your dog fat and plus he is old then he will have heart failure sooner or later but the stuff you are giving him is just enough

Is he underweight? If so then you may want to think about feeding him twice a day. If not and he's healthy, once a day is sufficient. He's not a puppy that has to eat several times a day.

No.
Don't feed him any more food.

The problem with some owner's is that they like to spoil there
dogs by feeding them more by feeling bad for them, which
in this case is because your dog is old.

Just make sure he eats till he is content.
