I got pulled over yesterday, and the cop said it was because my license plate was expired. But they weren't.

Then he asked for my drivers license, which I gave him, and it had been expired since my birthday at the end of October. I just completely spaced it out, which I know is my fault completely. He gave me a 300 dollar ticket for driving with an expired license.

I asked him if there was something wrong with my license plates, as that was apparently why I got pulled over, and he got really upset and wouldn't directly answer! He would never answer my question as to why I initially got pulled over... my license plates were fine!

I was really polite, and he started being a huge dick. He asked me if I was drunk, which I wasn't - not a drop, and I think that may have been to change the subject and fluster me?

Anyways, if anyone knows if this cop was in the wrong for pulling me over initially.... I feel like my rights were violated, and it was his lucky day that my license was up.

By the way, it was my dad's car. I don't know that by running the plates he would have been able to pull up my identification/ driver's license.

If you can sucessfully argue he had no reason for pulling you over, the ticket will be invalid. You could request a copy of the citation and the officer's report through Open Records laws.

For the "thumbs down" people, I suggest you read the Fourth Amendment and the Exclusionary Rule.

It's common practice to run license plates for warrant information. Very possibly your expired license appeared.

In California...

The jackass DMV has been alternating colors on the tabs so that they look the past years color until you get right up on them. I don't have a clue as to why they are doing it that way, buts it really screwing things up. 2009 tabs (blue) look like 2007 tabs (green), 2008 tabs (orange) look like 2006 tabs (red) until you're right up on them.

Maybe he thought yours expired, then saw he was wrong and did not want to admit it.

Honestly, I've made that mistake. I didn't nut up and get embarrassed or defensive about it. I apologized and asked the guy to have a nice night.

My guess would be he ran a routine check on the plate and found out your license was expired. You just did not understand him. Pay your ticket as you did let your license expire.

I would put money that you misheard him at first. Officers are able to check a person's driving record on the computer before you are pulled over...which would show an expired license.

You were wrong, your license is expired. Pay the fine and quite trying to find fault with the officer.

You must have been doing something to raise suspicion. Of course I got pulled over and guns pulled on me because my car looked like a robbers car. There may have been a bulletin about a car that looked like yours.

Sounds like he was having a bad day. He shouldn't have acted that way but I am sure it was an honest mistake...

When ever you feel you have been mistreated by a police officer ask them for their badge number. From my understanding they are required to give it upon request.

If you look like your avatar, that might have been the real reason you got pulled over. I've known attractive women who have gotten pulled over and hit on by cops.

Cops are generally poorly educated men with big egos... that is a bad combination.
