I was looking at a air rifle that is scoped and shoots 780 fps. I was wondering if that is enough to kill rabbits, squirrels, and birds. ( Not airsoft, air RIFLE).
thanks!

Yes, it can kill small animals within 20-30 yards with that power. Remember, shot placement is critical when using
a .177. Even if you hit the animal with that kind of power, pass through shots may not drop it instantly. You want one shot humane kills.

800 fps in .22 caliber air rifles is the basic minimum for clean humane kills of small game.
.177 is best suited for target shooting. .22 is best suited for hunting. All air rifles designed for competitive shooting are .177.
.177 is also great for "plinking" cans and stuff.

Yes, if scope and acceptable range conditions apply.
Suggest a red oak pickaxe handle to help run down
and kill wounded prey because if Deadeye Dick isn't
pulling the trigger I wouldn't think a second shot could
be trusted to apply any mercy. .177 kills but is better
applied to paper targets so you'll learn skill enough
not to waste larger projectiles. Speed mercy - not fps.

The best humane rifle for your purpose is the 22 caliber long rifle. Remington, Savage, Mossberg, Winchester, Marlin Brands.*

I worked at a golf course one summer shooting rabbits
i used a old daisy BB gun 320 fps
it was what our pest control permit allowed. (under 500 fps)
worked every time.

How many foot pounds of energy does it take to take down a rabbit ?

That certainly is fast enough, 405 miles per hour roughly - a ripe grape will knock you down at 60 mph if it hits you in the back or chest and leave a nasty bruise. A friend of mine threw a grape out of a car window going 50 miles per hour and hit a guy on a bicycle and it knocked him off his bike.

Yes, especially if you use pointed pellets.

I wouldn't use bb's because they don't have the weight for proper impact and penetration. Use only pellets.
