I was rarely successful in getting children that young to lose weight. However, with proper parental motivation, dietary counseling and exercise program, children can slow down their rate of gain, so that they will "grow into" a more acceptable weight.
Chances of success are greatest when the whole family is involved in a program of healthy eating and exercise. An uncooperative parent or sibling usually ruins the effort.

I've tried many diets and couldn't make anything work. Since having my first child, I've been carrying around an extra 30 pounds. This diet just made sense and showed me that everything I was doing before was wrong and a waste of my time.

Get the child off the couch and into a sport. Also, watch the food intake and take away bad foods. Fruits, vegetables, and lean meats.

a nine year old would need to see a doctor to make sure that they are doing it healthy. They would also need to stop eating junk food and get outside and play.

Stop eating candy and junk food. Eat a lot of fruit and veggies and stop drinking soda pop (coke, pepsi, etc.).
Get exercise - ride your bike, play ball, go swimming, go skating.

If your only nine you dont have to worry about it but the best way is to eat helthy and dont eat junk food, and get into a sport or go to a dance class something.
