>What's with this new "DIGITAL TV LAW" for 2009?

The US is changing from a analog TV broadcast system based on 1930's technology to a digital system based on 1990's technology.

>Or do we get FREE digital tv?

Over the air TV will still be free, but it will have a higher picture quality.

>What about our current TV's,

Digital TV signals can be cheaply converted to analog ones. The only TV's that will be obsolete are some portable TVs that do not have a way to attach an external TV.

Allows old TVs to display DVD quality on broadcast channels.

Allows new TVs to be built that display a higher resolution picture.

Allows more broadcast channels in a smaller frequency allocation. This will allow what was channels 52-69 to be used for new wireless services.

Over the years the abundance of analog antennas has actually "cramped" the air waves. To free them up people will have to switch to cable or buy a digital converter for their tv. I still think though that the HDTV market will still be quite high, because digital and HD are two totally different worlds. Pretty much though, all those channels you've been getting will now be digital and satellite will stay unchanged.

It means those old vintage TV's that use antennas won't work. They won't be able to pick up channels without a cable now.
