I think it is a nice story that has been told throughout antiquity. Of course, the names, places, and dates have changed as the story has been passed down. Still, it is a nice story.

No. The reason that parts of Jesus' life are "shrouded in mystery" is because they were irrelevant. The most useless Christians in the world are the Jesus-fans who obsess about the trivial details of their "savior's" life rather than make any effort to actually live as Christians and follow his example. Whether he lived or not, his teachings and example were actually worthwhile.

I have to say that I do. As a figure (even if there are inaccuracies) he is a one of importance, due to his influence. The best short treatment of his life from a philosophical perspective is in Karl Jaspers: The Original Thinkers.

btw: I am an atheist.

I don't know, because I have recently found some information regarding that story having been told before Jesus, about other deities. Basically, what I'm reading is that the Jesus story has been told before about Osiris and Dionysus and other gods. If this turns out to be true, then the implications for me, intellectually, will be pretty profound.

The Bible is the only reference which tells the story of Jesus. Were it not for the Bible, no one else would know he existed.

Which begs the question, if no other historical document cites the existence of a man that walked on water, fed a hungry crowd, and was crucified on a cross near Jerusalem, did he really exist?

I find religion very interesting. That's why I'm here. I do, however maintain the belief that Jesus was never even a person, let alone the son of God.

The only mystery is how his myth has lasted for so long. And even that isn't a mystery when you look at how christianity changes and adapts to survive.

"I like your Christ. I don't like your Christians, they don't act much like your Christ." -Ghandi

Pretty much sums it up for me. By the way, there is no historical or archaeological evidence to support the life of Jesus outside the bible and two third hand accounts several hundred years after he supposedly lived.
