la illaha illa Allah (laa ilaha ill-Allaah) may be translated as "There is no god but Allah".
It is part of the shahada or profession of faith that a person makes when he or she submits to the Will of Allah, Subhanna wa Ta'ala (Allah, Glorified and Exalted) and becomes a Muslim (a word that means, "one who submits to the Will of Allah, Subhanna wa Ta'ala).
"Ash hadu an laa ilaha ill-Allaah, wahadu la sharika lah w ash-hadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa Rasuluh"
"I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that He has not associates (partners, equals or sons or daughters) and I bear witness that Muhammad (sallaahu 'alaihi wasallaam/blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) is His slaave and His messenger/prophet"
When one states this in full faith and knowledge of what one is doing at the time, he or she has become a Muslim.
May Allah, Subhanna wa Ta'ala, continue to guide you to the truth that is Islam for your salvation and for the benefit of others.
As salaamu 'alaikym.

I am not a Muslim, but I speak Arabic as a second language. The phrase literally states:

La = None
illa = God
ha = is
illa = Except
Allah = God
Full meaning of this sentence is There is no God except Allah (God). Allah is God's name in Arabic.
Allah is more appropriate name than God. Because God is used for many concepts like Gods (for many gods), Godess (for female god) etc. But Allah is unique in sense that no one is like Allah and He is neither male nor female. And He is only one so there is no plural of Allah in Arabic language.
Further explanation:
Here it is being referred to God whom all Prophets of God worshipped like Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Mohammad and all Muslims in entire world.
Moses and Jesus referred to same one and only God as Father because they believed themselves as children of God in spiritual sense.
