Mormons are generally nice...

Before I joined the LDS church, at a stage when I was actually very opposed to it, I remember thinking how I wished that my church was like that. No paid ministry, every member getting at least one home visit each month, meals taken to the sick, huge humanitarian aid and service ethos, family home evening, big support network, strong moral values, good missionary programme, strong youth programmes, joyful and happy and loving, etc. Even then I thought that it was all Christianity should be.

Now that I am LDS, I agree with you entirely. "Mormonism" is Christianity. It is Christ's true gospel, the gospel He preached while on the earth. Other churches have strayed from it and invented stupid doctrines like the Trinity, and traditions like priests having to be celibate. But in the restored church, it is all as Christianity was always meant to be. Sure, we're not all perfect - most of us far from it - but we are, as you say "decent and humane".

** EDIT **
Gaia Rain, what is this nonsense? Where do you get your ideas? We DO NOT believe that women can’t get into heaven without being married. We DO NOT believe that we can change someone’s religious persuasion after death and we DO NOT call people names or ostracise them when the leave the church. In fact in general excommunication (which is only for serious sin) is kept quiet so we don’t even know when someone is “apostate” (I have never heard that word used). And where did your figure come from that Salt Lake City was the most vain city? How does one quantify vainness?

Thanks for the kind words!! I wish other people could see the good we do, and quit listening to all the lies and half-truths about us.

I can say though that I have met some very wonderful, kind, loving and decent people who aren't in the church. I know many other people who live their religion everyday and are willing to help others if they need it. Some are of other Christian faiths, some from other religions entirely, but they all have one thing in common: a big heart willing to feel love and compassion for others.

I feel it's better to give each religion it's fair shake. I don't think it's fair to others to say that their church isn't a good one, or that I'm better because I believe something different. Let's try to look at the good in everyone, instead of focusing on one part of just one religion.

Yes, I have noticed that. And thank goodness the Lord restored his Gospel and priesthoods to the earth while I was on it!

What a great time to be living. If it wasn't for the Saints, I wouldn't believe in God at all. It is great to have something believable to say is my religion. Because, what the Christians offer is far from believable to me. There is simply too much of the philosophies of men mingled with scripture. Too much adherence to false, wicked traditions that have existed since the Dark Age, when Warmongers had to deceive men and force them to believe, in order to maintain power and control.

So nice to have a "friendly "decent and humane" religion available today...

And to the "dude" right under me, "You should go back to school and try learning how to comprehend text. She said 'Mormon-ISM,' meaning the practices and principles, not the people. There is an obvious difference that apparently you do not have the intelligence to see."

While most Mormons are nice and decent, Mormonism is no different than any other religion. Its fanatics leave a dark mark on it. What is funny about Mormonism however, is that it is even more in denial when it comes to facts and science. The whole Mormon mythology is even weaker than the rest of Christian myths.

You mean like Warren Jeffs

We are individuals and will be judged on our own personal actions there are good decent and humane Mormons and there are bad Mormons just like everyone else.

sunny Anne the church of Christ does everything you mentioned without the Latter Day Saint part

Not sure if I'd consider it an evolutionary step or not. Interesting thought though, but I'd be more tempted to say that it was an evolution of freemasonry into a religion, with the loss of some important parts.

LOL. That is how I feel, too, but people just won't see that until they find out for themselves what the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is really all about.

That said, although our religion can bring about deep enlightenment and love, not all Mormons actually seek to become decent and humane as a result of the teachings. Sometimes there are people just too bound up in their own ways to learn what it is that God is really trying to teach them.

Hence, not all Mormons are decent and humane, although most that I have met are beautiful, loving and open to learning & growth. It's great to be living in the freedom of personal revelation and listening to the words of living prophets, who show us how to obtain our own direct revelation from God. That kind of spiritual and intellectual freedom is completely beautiful to me.

♥

EDIT: I have to agree with John Galt that there is that within Mormon culture which is far too focused on outward conformity. I try to break the norm, by wearing rainbow coloured shirts, and sometimes going barefoot to church.

The funny thing is, most people take no notice of how I dress, and love me for who I am. Out of all the hundreds of Mormons I know, there are only about four or five who have ever had a little tease of me because of dressing strangely (which I like to do, just to stir the pot, lol). It doesn't bother me if they do, because I know that human beings are prone to error, and it's okay for them to be different from me (because I'm not perfect either, but still perfectly lovable).

Mormons want to do what's right, but sometimes they do take it to extremes, as far as looking "squeaky clean" goes. I mean, who really cares about how people look? (not me)

EDIT 2: odd duck is right... I did kind of feel like this question was inflammatory. I wish, like you, that people would cease to believe such hogwash about us. But the same goes for Mormons... we also need to broaden our knowledge of other faiths, and see the good in everyone and everything. I do that, and it has only strengthened my faith in our God who rules all, through loving guidance, but never through coercion.

Where do you get that? Women are second class citizens, and can't get into "heaven" without being married "properly" to a mormon man...you call that decent? Humane?

Salt Lake City, Utah was found to be the most vain city in the US due to the fact that you have to "keep up appearances" in order to be seen favorably in the eyes of the church...that's decent and humane?

If someone doesn't have the "right" religious persuasion (according to you, anyway), you go along after they are dead and just sorta...change it...THAT'S decent and humane?

Wait, wait, there's more...how about if you screw up and they kick you out of church, call you names (apostate), which also means your family and friends and everyone around you shuns you, out of obligation, for life. How is that decent and humane?

I could go on and on. Look, I respect your religion of choice. I know for a fact there are a whole lot of good Mormons out there who just want to be good people. But there is NO religion that is more decent and humane than any other. Look into the history and the expectations of almost any religion, and you will find violence, judgmental attitudes, fear, coercion, you name it. Religion itself is NEVER decent and humane. The people who practice said religion can choose to be decent and humane people, but the religion itself...never.

EXACTLY!

It's just like the yuppies who gentrify whole neighborhoods and make them all nice and sparkly!

If I didn't know better, I'd think that the Mormons were these Aryan yuppies so damn squeaky clean that they're not even real people, but mannequins!

God, I hate it when groups of people get together with these horrible ideas of what's "decent" "correct" and "humane..."

Get real, Mormons (same goes for you Southern Baptists), light up a cigarette, get some tattoos and learn what real decency is all about!

What a bunch of fascist, sterile, automatons!
