Or you can take a regular cake mix, make the cake, and while it is still hot, heat some butter in a skillet, add powdered sugar and a little of your brandy (if you have it) - just enough to allow the sugar to dissolve. Then add a little more and just barely heat (won't evaporate the alcohol). Then poke holes in the hot cake and pour the icing over it. That should do the trick. You can do that with either chocolate cake, white, or yellow cake. You want to be careful using the booze, though, because too much and none of the other guests will want it.

Fruit Cake Recipe:
1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
4 large eggs
1 cup dried fruit
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup nuts
2 quarts Irish whiskey
lemon juice to taste
Before you begin, sample the Irish Whiskey to check for quality.
*** All ingredients should be of the highest quality ***
Select a large mixing bowl, accurate measuring cup, etc.
Pour one level cupful of Irish whiskey into a glass and drink it.
This is known as searing to keep the juices in.
Repeat above steps twice and relax a while.
With an electric mixer, beat one cup of budder in a large fluffy bowl. Add shuger and beet again. Pour one lebel cupful of irish wisie and dringk.

Go online and look for a Trifle recipe. They're pretty easy to do, with layers of fruit, cream, cake bits, and soaked in sherry. Very potent.

I've made this many times. There is no need to toast the nuts. Sometimes I use walnuts, sometimes pecans, both good!! Also, you can use an angel food cake pan for this.
