Because "it is easier to claim to be, than to actually live by it." Most people on "religion", are going specifically by what they are taught and not what they have actually researched. The truth to them is argued mostly on someone Else's interpretation, rather than seeking their own opinion based on documented knowledge. People like this allow for ignorance to prosper.

Why does ATTACKING Jesus bring out vulgarity and stupidity? I've seen enough very nasty things written by non-believers.
Religion is a very PERSONAL thing, and you cannot separate the person from their beliefs. So if someone attacks one's beliefs, it is the same as an attack on the person ("ad hominem"). Naturally, people become defensive when attacked, and some believe that a good OFFENSE makes the best DEFENSE... so they can get very OFFENSIVE in doing so!
Personally, tact is my favorite "weapon" of choice. As conservative thinker/writer, William F Buckley, Jr. once said, "Diplomacy is when you stab someone in the back, and they turn around and say, 'THANK YOU!'"
Have a blessed day.

This is not an answer to your question, I realize - but I have noticed that too. I love intelligent debates but find it nearly impossible to do so with members of Jesus' fan club. When someone questions your faith, they aren't necessarily condeming you for it - perhaps they just want to learn something?

Because people are offended that their faith is being question. It's stupid that they defend Jesus, yet they're rude about it...Is that what Jesus, the man they claim to follow, would have done?

They are just expressing their current nature and level of social development.
Edit:
By the way, this is not limited to any one given belief system or lack thereof.

Because some individuals have been (as God told us in his word) given over to a reprobate state of mind. God is not mocked...He will repay.

it doesn't have to be that way. Vulgarity should not be part of a Christian witness.
