Both our dogs are wearing e-collars following their spay/neuter surgeries. Our girl, who already has good ear position, does not seem to be affected.

Our boy has prick ears and we had given up on gluing some time ago (couldn't get it right ourselves and couldn't find a groomer who even knew what I was talking about). Since wearing the e-collar, one of his ears is now tipping significantly. Not just to the correct position, but a more sideways flop. The other ear seems to be "softening" a bit at the tip.

Oh, and this may not be related but our boy also had his last two deciduous teeth removed at the same time.

Is this likely to be permanent? They'll be wearing the collars for another 4 days, just to be safe.

Our vet uses dissolvable sutures and they need to be keep dry for at least 10 days. We didn't immediately put on the collars until it was evident that they would both lick at the incision area. Better safe than sorry.

As for the tooth removal. It's like ragapple said. Shelties ear position can be affected by teething.

I dont even know what you are talking about- I'd ask a vet. If it's anything like taping ears (like in great danes) then having an ecollar bending it down may affect it.
I say if you are not showing them, who cares what his ears look like?

Is it absolutely necessary for them to be wearing the collars? At our clinic, we don't send ecollars home with spays or neuters. I would honestly think that they can probably go without unless the surgery was more extensive than just a simple neuter/spay. Just keep a close eye on them and make sure there is no licking/chewing of the incision site. The tooth removal should have no effect unless his ears were pinned under his head during the extraction.

Humm I don't have shelties but in my breed ears of a teething pup often go "flyaway: (prick) and fold down again when teething is done.
