If the Chinese student is in the United States, that student should know. Otherwise, it's just a little bit of history.

Actually, learning something about the symbols of most of the major national flags has value. The cultural psyche is partially communicated by the national flag. A chemistry student still needs a rounded education, so if that is what you are objecting to then just give up -- resistance is futile.

It seems like he/she didn't know how many stripes there are on the flag and was embarrassed, I'm very curious in knowing the full story.

I had my education in Hong Kong and Japan, I never had similar "question" asked in classes. Interesting!!!!

I answered the question, although he was a little offensive at the end. If it was a legitimate request for information, it was treated as such. If it was done as a joke, then I was gullible.

If this is a student attending a college in the U.S. then I suspect they want the students to know something about their host country.
I would not want to be in China and not know anything about their history, and culture.
