Wine is used in many religious services, and has more links to religion than any other drug (alcohol IS a drug).

As far as religious experiences caused by drugs, ergot would be the most widely spread hallucinogen. It is fairly certain that the Book of Revelation was the result of accidental ergot ingestion.

Most Indian tribes use Peyote.
The natural herbs are the best. However I would suggest you learn how to go into religlious experiences without the drugs. Meditation, Yoga, and many websites will help. Such as The Secret, Go Gratitude, Silva, Neal Donald Walsch or just type in spiritual enlightenment into google or other search engines
Always remember that when the student is ready the teacher will appear, also, the other way around.

That would most likely be mescaline. It is used by various South American religions and some in the east as well. It derives form cactus buttons. This is a hallucinogen and it is still used by several American Indians.

Marijuana is also used in various religions but this is a meditation like experience, not visually "tripping" like mescaline which is believed to allow you to see spirits.

LSD wasn't popular (or invented) until the lave 50's/early 60's. Mescaline and Marijuana have been know for at least 3,000 years.

Marx said it was opium, but someone recently - I'm not sure if it was George Carlin or Bill Maher - said it was now more crack cocain or crystal meth. Ah! Now I remember! Bill Maher was talking about how a story about how a woman that talked an armed man down via a religious experience had been revealed to be partly because she shared some crystal meth with him. So it must be crystal meth?

I'd say it's a tie between cannabis, peyote, and Salvia divinorum. But my preference is to look at drugs which occur naturally because they actually have a long history of being used in religious ceremonies.

Catholics would argue it's wine. *laugh*
