It does not appear from the map that the faiths chosen are based on examination of the alternatives, otherwise why would the different faiths be grouped together so much?

Well the Geography lessen although entertaining. Doesn't say it all. It just doesn't I live in Canada. The "red one above the U.S" I have been all across my country and most of the U.S. If the mapmakers were being completely honest with there hasty colour by numbers. You would have seen a multicoloured speckled map. Not those large concentrations. We have a buffet of churches, mosques and temples etc. all over Canada. As does the U.S. I have been to Mexico and the Dominican etc. on vacations, the only churches I saw while I was there were Catholic. That doesn't mean anything either. Those countries are famous for their off the wall cults. The world is a broad and surprisingly small place. You can always find a common ground that suits your thoughts anywhere.

I believe that there is a good possibility that religion in today's world has much to do with your family environment.

You find many children who grow up in a home with abuse will also abuse.
Most children do and follow what they know into adulthood.
Some venture out and learn about the world but many will grow and have children never leaving the area.

Well, it depends on the people who settled there. Each demonination comes from a different part of the world. There are churches of different demoninations in each place. Demoninations came from reforms in different countries and different areas in the country.
