Since it's quite obvious that religious teachings are in many ways metaphorical and subject to wildly varying interpretation, why does so many people insist that their personal interpretation is correct, when the language itself is written is such a vague style?

We believe in what we believe. We have faith in what we have faith in. And we think what we think, that's all there is to it, I am a Christian, I believe it's the correct way to go, you ask why, I just believe it's the most reliable and the most amazing thing you could ever experience, that's why. And others have their own opinions, which I can't speak for.

I think too many people mistake religion for faith, when they are two different things.

Religion is simply a tool we should use to begin to learn about faith. If people would realize that faith is the ultimate goal, not religion, they would be less determined to believe only one way.

Faith, however, is a much more difficult (and at the same time simpler) concept to grasp than religion is. Religion is simply a set of rules. Most people can be taught to follow rules, and they are happy to follow them.

Faith, though, requires you to learn when the rules can be abandoned. People who are very comfortable with following rules often find the idea that the rules are not truly necessary a frightening and abhorrent concept, so they resist it and mistakenly claim that the rules are vital.

People who are ready for faith, however, should not let others' fear of losing the framework of rules deter them.

what a great question, and well put !! The answer is simply that people are vain, self-righteous parasites of the universe who will believe whatever is convenient to believe to fit their agenda. On some level, we all think we are immortal and the world revolves around us. WE ARE GOD (like}, so how could my (your} interpretation be wrong ? Obviously no one's got it right !!!!

The Bible is pretty clear. I have not noticed anything vague about it. That's just a cute saying by people who don't like what they see in the Bible, so they decide it's symbolic of something other than what it actually says.

I'll go with human nature in wanting to be right and insecurity if their beliefs are challenged in any way.

It has to do with the feeling people get when they read or learn about their belief.

That or they 're so brainwashed they no longer have the capability of freethought.
