There are meters that are already fitted with serial communications using RS232/RS485.

The more complex meters that measure multiphase voltage, current, phase angles, frequency, wattage, power factor, and KVAR need to speak a protocol like MODBUS over that RS232 so you can access each of those data items. They typically go to a computer or PLC which can query them and display the answers and alarms on an operator interface or a monitor.
