I'm a junior in high school, but I've started doing a college search a little early. I already have my list of schools I'm going to apply to. I haven't visited anywhere yet, but I plan to start in the spring. But I know I'm going to need to get financial aid if I'm going to go to college at all. So my question is, when is best to start applying for scholarships? Would it be okay to start now? And where can I find some good scholarships?

You should start searching for college scholarships this year. There are some college scholarships available for juniors to apply for consideration. Scholarship deadlines happen throughout the calendar year. I will include some free resources to locate college scholarships.

First, your high school guidance office has a list of grants and scholarships offered from your state. Some states offer some scholarships based on your gpa, but almost all offer grants based on financial need. In addition, they have a list of local scholarships which are the easiest to get.

Second, your local public library has a book listing scholarships with some not even listed on the web.

Finally, join several free membership scholarship search engines. You enter a profile, and it will search for scholarships matching your profile. There are scholarships for almost anything out there including wearing duct tape to the senior prom.

Good luck!

Applying, I am not so sure, but finding scholarships now would make for a huge advantage. Firstly, have you talked to your guidance counselor about this? If not, you definitely should; they will have a huge book that lists all of the common to rare scholarships, with everything in between.

If you are going to a college inside of the state where you reside, you will have more opportunities. But if not, you should still have lots of options.

From personal experience, I can tell you this; if you know which schools you are going to apply to, visit them. Talk to the admissions person in charge of the school. For example, if you like "whatever" university for business; visit the university, and visit the business department/school. When applying for school, I just happened to visit my second choice school. Not only did they know of scholarships that I could apply for, but they helped me; I ended up paying for nothing but living expenses.

You would be surprised how helpful some schools can be when you are there in person. I am sure other people will have some better supplementary advice, but nevertheless, good luck with your search.
