The NIV translation says it like this:
God blesses those who realize their need for Him.
To be "poor in spirit" means that your spirit man is lacking something vital. A relationship with God. It's that part of you which God speaks to.
Most of us are guided by our mind, will and emotions and not by what God feeds into our spirit. If we would actually "listen" to what our spirit "hears", we might not have so many problems.

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
I believe it is those who are poor in spirit with the world and the evil in it. They turn to God and recieve a promiss and a joy in their life knowing that some day you will be in heaven with the Lord forever. Thats the blessing. Not only going to heaven but having the knowledge of it for the rest of your life. No more fear.

in Jesus time, the Pharisees were not teaching God's word ot the people as they were required to. They wieghed down the people with traditions of men and the people were spiritually famished. Jesus gave us the 'beattitudes' at Matthew 5.
Those poor in spirit represent people who yearned for enlightment, spiritual leaders and direction. The footnote in the reference bible describe these ones as beggars of God's spirit. They were tossed about like sheep w/out a shepherd. For these humble ones, the kingdom was meant for them because of their unpretentiousness and meek spirit.
Today billions of people are being taught incorrectly but can't break free from man's traditions. Those who have or are looking for satisfying answers and who are humble can inherit God's kingdom.

Matthew 5:3(NLT) - God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
What Jesus meant by this is if you want to live for God, you've got to be willing to give when others take, to love when others hate, to help when others abuse. By giving up your own rights in order to serve others, you will one day receive everything God has in store for you.

When interpreting, “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
One must remember the word poor itself has changed meanings slightly over the years. Rather than the word poor meaning weak or bad. In this case it refers to money/power. Or more appropriately how the money/power is used.
Recall the bible talks about it being easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter in to heaven. A person poor in sprit in this case refers to a person that while he/she may have a great deal of money/power, does not use that money/power to buy privileges or take advantage of others. In other words they use their money/power simply trying doing what is right and not flaunting it. Poor in sprit (but not necessarily physically financially poor.) Perhaps a more clear way to say it would be: those that are humble regardless of their social and/or economic status.
A lot of people like to interpret it as being someone searching for God and trying to learning more. But that is a couple of verses later Mat 5:6 Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Some say it refers to people that have had a loss or something that has shaken their faith (though they still have faith). That also is mentioned in a later verse. Mat 5:4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Before I list all the other interpretations that are actually referenced in a later verse let me just copy in the text so the section can be read in context. (sorry for making this so long)
Mat 5:1 And seeing the multitudes, he ascended a mountain: and when he was seated, his disciples came to him.
Mat 5:2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
Mat 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 5:4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Mat 5:5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Mat 5:6 Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Mat 5:7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Mat 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Mat 5:9 Blessed are the peace-makers: for they shall be called children of God.
Mat 5:10 Blessed are they who are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 5:11 Blessed are ye when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you *FALSELY*, for my sake.
Mat 5:12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Mat 5:13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt hath lost its savor, with what shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot by men.
(*FALSELY* is normally lower case and no *’s. But so many groups like to leave it out I thought I would bring some attention to that very important word in 5:11)
Hope that helps,
May Our Creator watch over you and your family.

He is talking about the least among us. Abraham Lincoln said a similar thing about how a nation treats the least of it's people.

Poor in spirit people are just people that don't look at life as a gift from God. All that means is that they do what they want and they don't really think that they are hurting God on the inside.
