Or should they be limited to snacking food?

That depends. Most store-bought varieties are filled with refined sugar and preservatives. So you're likely better off making your own, whether you have them for breakfast or snacks. At least you'll know what's in them!

Here's a simple recipe to try:

Homemade Granola Bar Recipe

3/4 cup rolled oats
3/4 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1/4 cup toasted wheat germ
1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/3 cup raw honey
1/3 cup organic cacao nibs (raw chocolate pieces) or semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions:
Combine the oats, flour, wheat germ, and cinnamon in bowl. Mix well. Add the honey, and stir into the mixture. The consistency should be moist and crumbly. Next, add the raisins and cacao nibs. Coat an 8-inch square pan with nonstick cooking spray. Spoon the mixture into the pan, making one large block. Bake at 300°F for 18 to 20 minutes, or until lightly browned. Cool to room temperature. Cut the block into bars, and serve.

Hope this helps.

As part of your breakfast, yes, because of the granola...but not JUST for your breakfast. You need more than that. They make a great snack too.*

I think there's too much sugar in that kind of thing. Just as there is too much sugar in our North American diets.
You can make much better, healthier and (much) cheaper food by getting oats and making your own.
Lots of recipes on the internet, you can make a big batch at once every week or something.

I like to soak organic quick oats in a blended solution of milk or rice milk, plain organic yogurt and fruit. This is actually better than anything I've bought in a store.

They work ad both. The grains and other stuf in them make them okay for a part of your breakfast and it also works as a snack because it's healthy and delicious.

Granola bars are very high in sugar...so I don't think they are a very good choice.

Not all bars are alike. It depends how healthy they are, look at the label for fat, salt and sugar.
