Wow, well, that is a tough situation. Does your description of the neighbor's behavior include the one who called and invited you? If not, then they invited you because they want to see you, so if you and DH are up to it, then a celebration might be a nice thing. It's too bad that your neighbors feel that awkward that they are behaving that way because your husband got sick, how sad...I guess you need to look over the situation as a whole, did the neighbors invite you to a party for the whole neighborhood, or did they invite just you and DH over for a quiet celebration? If it is going to involve all your neighbors, and you feel too awkward, well, the neighbor in question is reaching out to you. Maybe it is an opportunity for you and your husband to show the neighborhood that you're ok, I don't know....whatever decision you make, I wish you a blessed and happy new year, and good health for your husband.........

Well, why not go. Did you ever think that they to, felt weird and uncomfortable about the cancer thing? Some people, actually most people, avoid those kinds of things because they don't know what to say.
