I understand that the employee may feel fustrated for not understanding the customer, but he/she should put themselves in the cutomer's shoes. I am sure they too wish they could speak/understand English. Unfortunately, it is specially difficult for an adult to learn a different language while trying to work hard to provide for their families too.

The employee as well as the customer can both put more effort into learning the language, why should the employee learn Spanish? Well, it will make them more marketable, employers love to hire bilinguals for the exact same reason you get fustrated about.

Remember this-
"Diversity- whether acknowledged or not - has always been part of America."

Many DO understand English just not all of our little odd sayings or such. My mother is a good example. She too might ask you to explain what you mean simply because the English she speaks is Proper English taught in another country. Also some accents are hard for those born elsewhere to understand. How would you do on the East Coast? Probably not too well.

I am a US citizen born in this country and I just got back from a business trip to Chihuahua Mexico. I was really surprised at the amount of English that was spoken and printed there.

I really get upset when I go to Lowe's and have to read through the signs finding English and yet here I was in another country and they were catering to English.

I am also tired of answering the phone and a recorded message asking me if I want to continue in English or Spanish.

Perhaps it was because of green backs.

Just wanted to share.

do what we everyone else does - say "no comprende espanol por favour" - then turn around and walk out. And do not do business there anymore. Find another business where they DO speak english.

but make sure that the person you are speaking to, IS speaking english even if it's with an accent.

I speak perfect english, but with an accent, and I have had americans telling me to "go back home you foreign b*tch and learn to speak proper english" because they are too lazy to listen through my accent.

If you live in America, speak English. If a place you patronise has someone who says they cannot speak English, put in a complaint with the better business bureau. You can also call for the supervisor.

Boycott these places and only go to places whose employees speak English. If evryone did this the businesses would have no choice but to hire English-speaking people.

i would change immigration laws in north America so that they ended up more like those in Sweden.
the immigrant is told where to live. they must find work. keep the work not be a burden . not commit any crime and learn the language if not then up until the person has been there more then 10 years the person can be booted out quickly

"The English speaking nation of America welcomes you, your prosperity or lack there of will strongly be connected to your ability to communicate, it is in your best interest to learn the language of the land." Business owners should put up signs that read "If you want something from me realize that I only speak English".

They are telling you to get lost basically,a lot of them do that on purpose they are not the fools you think they are.Spend your money where you feel welcome.Case in point if you travel across the border there is never a shortage of English speaking people who want your money.

Unfortunately, many of these people still feel the southwest US is part of Mexico, and they will be offended at you if you do not speak perfect Spanish. They will assume you are mentally deficient. They will be really offended if you speak English.

They seriously want to go back to 1840 and rewrite history.
