I'd be suspicious that he's trying to kill me. NEVER EVER pat someone that's coughing. Leave them alone. To cough means that their air passage is open and to pat them could startle them and if an article of food is in their mouth, it could cause them to swallow it, lodge in their throat and cause them to choke.

he might but it just depends on more than jus him patting her on the back. He was probably just trying to be nice and help her.

The person is simply compassionate. Then again they may not know how to perform CPR or the Heimlich maneuver and do not want to see you choke to death in front of him!
