1. What's the difference between Professional training and Puppy class training?

Normally when one refers to "professional training" the dog is sent to a trainers for a period of time and trained. The probelm with this is the owner isn't also trained so while the dog comes back ready to work for someone who knows what they are doing normally it will not work for the owner.

"Puppy classes" are classes for young puppies that the owner and the dog attend. They are great for socialization and teach a few of the basics but don't go into great detail. For anything above the most basic things the owner and dog will need to attend additional classes. However since the dog and owner are being trained together they both will have an understanding of the exercises taught and should work better together as a team.

Unless your pup is extremely large and dominant or you are very small and weak you should be able to train him with a flat buckle collar.

Unless you learn to use one properly from some one who is experienced you can do a lot of damage to the dog. A choke collar is called a choke collar for a reason, you can choke a dog to death with one. Never leave one on a dog when unattended!

I would recomend a soft choke collar (not a chain) or a limited slip or martingale style collar. You want the collar to make a "p" for puppy when facing the dog and you want it right behind the ears. Don't use continuous presure. You should be able to simply give a few little tugs in the right place for a correction.

As for the puppy class and prof. trainer. You should find a puppy class that is tought by a profesional trainer. Here is a website that can help you find a good trainer/ class. Don't do petsmart.

If your pup is young... stick with a basic buckle or snap collar that does not tighten. You don't want to cause back or shoulder injury. I would not move to a choke until the pup is at least six to nine months old. Hold off as long as you can.
Still place the other collar in the same place and use the same way.

Best of luck and congrats on your pup.

I'm no sure of the difference between professional training and puppy class training. You have to ask the places. Does professional mean you and the dog are taught by a professional? It may be the same as puppy training.

The best way to train your dog in the basics is to take him to a class, and they can tell you what to do about the choke or if to use one. Remember when they're puppies, their bones aren't as strong. German shepherds are the best. Be good to yours.
