I had a rather large tribal sun between my shoulders. I now have a full back piece that my artist was able to cover and incorporate into a japanese maple tree that was part of my tattoo. I did not think I would be able to ever cover it since it was so deep and dark. I went to the artist first and he took a look at it and was sure he was able to cover it. It was funny cause during the outline phase everyone kept commenting that the sun was so cool. I can only tell what used to be there. Go to an artist and discuss how you can cover it. Good luck!

i have had a couple of coverups and they have turned out wonderfully. i also have a friend who had a tribal armband and she got it covered up and it loks amazing. BUT not all coverups look good, many of them are pretty awful.
the most important thing you can do is find a talented custom artist who can create something for you that will sufficiently cover the old tattoo. not all coverups come out the way that the customer wanted them to, and not all artists are able to do coverups and are sadly mistaken about their own abilities as an artist. look at portfolios and don't go to anyone who's art doesn't impress you.

if you find a talented artist, practically anything can be covered up. i know someone who has a back piece that covered up 2 hideous tattoos (a cat and a rose) and the artist did a flawless job covering them both. just talk to your artist (as someone up there suggested) and the two of you can come up with something a lot more fabulous than a tribal armband :)

I have one of my tattoos that I got when I was 18 covered up.
It used to be the words "ftp" on my upper arm.
I got really sick of it after a year, and it took me about another year to come up with something I wanted to cover it up. I got a dragon over it. So far it's just the outline, but I can already tell you won't be able to tell what used to be there after the coloring gets put in.
Talk to your tattoo artist about it, I am sure she or he can come up with an awesome idea for a cover-up. Mine helped me with my idea.

yes, my friend kinda did a covered up change tattoo thing. she covered up her lil Chinese symbol with a more bigger one with a lantern and some water and a flower, kinda weird when you describe it but its freaking awesome. i always thought that when you do a cover up you will still be able to see it. but you cant.
