Typically, insurance rates will vary from State to State and can even vary by ZIPCODE! It also will depend on the type of car/truck, coverages, limits of liability, and driving record. SOme companies run credit scorees and MOST run a motor vehicel report and CLUE (Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange) report to see about undisclosed accident involvement.

The best thing to do is call a LOCAL independent agent, after you turn 18. Don't go across town, or to some other city - look for someone CLOSE. Just look in the phone book for the PIA or Big I (Trusted Choice) logos and you will find a professional licensed agent that will be able to help you solve your insurance problems, and give you rate comparisons of several different companies. Be sure to ask them if they have someone that specializes in youthful operators.

An independent insurance agent will normally have a dozen different companies and if he cannot help you, he should be networked with other local agents that can.

At any rate, you would probably come out cheaper by being insured on your parents' policy. When do you turn 18? Since you are only 17, you cannot sign an insurance application since you are not old enough to sign a contract - and, an insurance policy IS a contract between you and the insurance company.

Most of the replies on this site will either say "go to this on-line carrier or that on-line carrier or that 1-800 number" but I'm sure that when you do, you will find some impersonal computer user with a script to work from and you won't be able to talk with the same person every time you have a problem! Others on this site will just type a bunch of junk, just to hear their keyboard clicking and to see their name in print!

As far as the TYPE of auto - look for something that you can pay CASH for and not have to carry physical damage (sometimes called FULL COVERAGE in error) to satisfy a lienholder. Maybe your parents are ready to get THEM a new car and let you drive their old "hand me down" until you get some experience.

It has been my experience in my agency that a newly licensed driver will wreck their car within the first 18 months of driving. Here's hoping that you beat the average!

Good luck, drive RESPONSIBLY and I hope this helps

You have to shop around for car insurance, be diligent.

As for cheap cars to insure, check with an agent or Google to find a list by the Insurance Institute of America, which keeps these records for all insurance companies.

To keep your rates down, save up a big deductable and set it aside. Having a large deductable means you are going to be paying more of the costs in case of damage. Keep your driving record clean by driving like you have a brain. No tickets or accidents. Bad drivers deserve to pay more. If you get into an accident not your fault, take a copy of the police report to your agent.

Go to http://www.confused.com or http://www.moneysupermarket.com to search multiple insurance providers for the best deal, also small cars with smaller engine sizes are less on insurance, but because of your age, between £400 - £500 per year would be a good estimate.
