The Secret of the smile is not in the mouth, but in the eyes. The best way to accomplish this is to be happy, or think of something happy. If you feel happy, then a natural smile will emerge from you face. A good smile communicates your happiness, and the easiest way to achieve this is to feel happy when the shot is taken

I find that anyone who asks his subject(s) to "smile" is amateurish.
This is my nephew. He didn't want to smile (he told me so), and I said that's fine. See, he doesn't smile here.

On the other hand, this one was different. We were goofing off. I used an ultra wide lens (16 mm) and was just mere a foot away from him. I said, 'Look stupid!" and he did.

And finally, this is me. I look like hell when I smile, so I didn't, for this pose.

It comes down to this--smile if you want to. Or if you don't want to, you can grin, or not smiling at all. It's a pity that the photographer does not engage in something funny that would bring out a smile from anyone naturally, but that's another story.
Hope this cheers you up for the holidays.

Let me guess, middle school or lower high school grade male? Judging from the immature language and poor self image, I'd put you in that category. If not, man you have some catching up to do! Just keep this thought in mind...women like smiling men.

I demand that my models do NOT smile.
A photograph of a smiling girl is a photograph of a smiling girl and not much more BUT, when the expression is one of ... seriousness, then emotional responses flood into the viewers mind. The imagination begins to work. The question is asked - 'What IS she thinking?'.
Therefore, if it is a 'sensual' or 'emotional' image that you wish to portray, forget the smiling.
If it is just a shot of the girl-next-door, smile away.
Look at this and see how there is a BIG difference between it and the 'standard studio smiley' ...

Is there any emotional content for you?
Would you prefer it if she was smiling?
What do YOU want as a portrait of yourself?

Just get in front of a mirror and practice. There are lots of different kinds of smiles. Get your face to move the way you need it.
