I just moved to Angel Fire, New Mexico and would like to know where some good camping is year round, snow and all. I don't mean pay sites, I mean REAL camping.

You've got the whole darned Valle Vidal Unit of the Kit Carson National Forest just up the road in Cimarron. There are a few drive-up sites, but you can slap on a pack and go find a good campsite. Great spots are up near the base of Little Costilla Peak and Ash Mountain. Seally Canyon and Greenwood Canyon also have some nice places.

You'll have to deal with a few scouts from time to time that wander that far north of Philmont, but only really around Ring Place, Rich Cabins, and Whiteman Vega. (All on the map.)

Now...and I'm making NO promises...get in with some of the staff members over at Philmont. They MAY give you some pointers or MIGHT be able to take you some places on their property. If I still worked there, I'd take you...but I'm not in that position.

Lastly...the next time you go to Taos, stop in Mudd 'N Flood's gear store. It's in the plaza. Somebody there will give you some info too. There are lots of places to go.

Good Luck.

This is probably the only link you'll need.

Carson NF has 330 miles of trails with plenty of places for dispersed car camping or backpacking. Some of the trailheads are right next to Angel Fire.
