I just wanted to know if there was another reason than just the tension. between the soviet and usa in that time. I don't know why people are talking about Bin Laden, I think this is another story not directly related to the subject

Call it tit for tat, if for no other reason. Since the end of WW II, the US and USSR were on opposing sides of just about every issue. It's too bad that diplomacy wasn't the tool then, that it is today. The two country's may have found that their individual interests were not that far apart.

In Vietnam, the Soviets chose to support the communist north against the the US interests and ARVN. The US support of Pakistan and Afghanistan against the Soviets was our chance to get even.

It is simple.

A russian defeat would demoralize the Russians and the Russian people. It makes it hard for the Russian government to convince their people that they could take on a super power like America and win if they are defeted by the fighters of afganistan.

By the way if you read the book Terror Inc Osama bin laden a book written by the only western reporter to be allowed interview Osama face to face you will see even Osama denies recieving training or aid from the US. He states that the Muhajadeen recieved training and weapons from the US but he was never offered it and if he was he would have turned it down.

Sorry if you dont beleive it it is a fact buy the book and read it. By the way the author of the book is left leaning.

The US never allied or helped Osama bin Laden. He came in late in the soviet conflict dumped a lot of money and dashed back out. We were funding and allied with Ahmed Shah Massoud, enemy of Bin Laden and Late Commander of the Northern Alliance who helped defeat the taliban/al-qaeda......We did, however, funnel money to one jerk throgh Charlie Wilson I believe...His name is Gulbuddin Heckmaytar, he was against the soviets but for anyone who gave him money.

If you watched the movie, you'll remember where C Wilson talked about stopping Soviet aggression before they invaded other countries (Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, etc). That was why we helped Afghanistan.

"The Americans want us to continue fighting but not to win, just to bleed the Russians."

-Ismael Khan, Afghan Commander, Herat

If you want to learn more about the conflict that occurred in Afghanistan, then you will have to do more than just watch 'Charlie Wilson's War' - try reading the Complete 911 Timeline.

They didn't help anyone defeat commies!! the Afghan's saw it as expelling IMPERIALISTs. Our govt sold it to the American people as a challenge to the Soviet Empire who happened to be communists. Remember, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend". and yes we armed Osama Bin Laden to help fight the Soviets who are now regressing to a dictatorship! they never really evolved into a democracy.

Democratic Congresscritter Charlie Wilson may have wanted to help theAfghan people, that's a laudable liberal goal. But congressmen make HORRIBLE foreign policy implementers. Thanks to Charlie, Muslims now believe that they are capable of overthrowing international superpowers.
9-11 would never have happened without his interference.

Gee, thanks!
