Romans 3:7: "For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my LIE to his glory; why am I also judged as a sinner?"

In other words, if a lie sells Christianity, it's not a problem.

By the way, the Commandment against "bearing false witness" refers ONLY to official proceedings. It does not mean you can't lie in general.

As a few others mentioned "Thou shalt not bear false witness" Exodus 20:16. The 9th commandment. A narrow interpretation that says this only forbids lying about the guy that lives in the house next door to you is clearly ridiculous and at odds with the understanding of all people that practice the faith.

Oh yes it does. Here are a few examples;

Leviticus 6:2-4

2 If a soul sin, and commit a trespass against the LORD, and lie unto his neighbour in that which was delivered him to keep, or in fellowship, or in a thing taken away by violence, or hath deceived his neighbour;

3 Or have found that which was lost, and lieth concerning it, and sweareth falsely; in any of all these that a man doeth, sinning therein:

4 Then it shall be, because he hath sinned, and is guilty, that he shall restore that which he took violently away, or the thing which he hath deceitfully gotten, or that which was delivered him to keep, or the lost thing which he found,

John 8:44

44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Revelation 21:8

8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Revelation 22:14-16

14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

You obviously don't know the Bible.

Psalm 5:6, Proverbs 6:16-18 and 12:22 says God hates a lying tongue (lies).

Hosea 4:1-3, Mark 7:21-23, and Romans 1:29 groups lying with other sins.

Psalm 36:3 shows that lying is evil.

1 Peter 2:1 tells us not to lie.

It must be bad enough for what Revelation 21:27 has to say about it.

You might, also, want to check out Psalm 101:7.

It's obvious throughout the Bible that lying is looked down upon, is evil, not accepted, and wrong. Why wouldn't it be sin?

Lev.19:11
Col.3:9
Prov. 6:16 - 6:19
Prov. 12:22
Is. 59:2 and 3
Ps. 119:163
Rev. 21:8
Hos.4:1 and 2
Prov. 17:4
Rev. 21:27
Rev. 22:15
Jer. 9:3 - 9:5

Those are just a few I grabbed out of my Bible's Topical Index for you.

Rev 21:8
"8 But the cowardly, unbelieving,[a] abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

Prov. 12:22
"22 Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD,
But those who deal truthfully are His delight."

I'd say that's condemning lying. .and, thus, forbidding it.

I HATE THAT STUPID GAP AD!

Lying is spreading falsehood and dishonesty. Lies originate from the father of lies, also known as . . . the devil. "You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies." (John 8:44) Christians are given a choice, do we want to be children of God or do we want to be children of the devil. Lying comes from the devil.

Scourge_of_Fascism - Before you make any quotes on the Holy Scripture, make sure that what you are quoting is kept in context. Rarely have I seen such a blatant misuse of Scripture than that which you are trying to spout as what the Scripture says. Look at the whole context, "But if our unrighteousness brings out God's righteousness more clearly what shall we say? That God is unjust bringing his wrath on us? (I am using a human argument). Certainly not! If that were so, how could God judge the world? Someone MIGHT argue, 'IF my falsehoods enhances God's truthfulness and so increases his glory, why am I still CONDEMNED AS A SINNER?' Why not say - as we are being slanderously reported as saying and as some claim that we say - 'Let us do evil that good may result'? Their CONDEMNATION is deserved." (Romans 3:5-9)

Revelation 22:14-15
14Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

In Exodux 20:16 the Bible states that one should not give false witness against thy neighbor. Giving false witness is lying. So, the Bible does forbid lying.

The Bible does say that lying is a sin. Proverbs 6:16 There are six things that Jehovah does hate; yes, seven are things detestable to his soul: lofty eyes, a false tongue, and hands that are shedding innocent blood, a heart fabricating hurtful schemes, feet that are in a hurry to run to badness, a false witness that launches forth lies, and anyone sending forth contensions among brothers. Notice that lying is really mentioned twice, a false tongue and someone launching forth lies. These are things that God hates.

Revelation 21:8 is perhaps the most terrifying verse on liars:

"But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

The essential thing to remember is that sin in general is what seperates us from God. Thankfully Jesus made a way for us to be forgiven and find righeousness in Him alone.

Jesus saves!
