Children's cough medicine has many side effects. We use a teaspoon of honey and it really works great.

This is a hot topic after the recent withdrawal of infant cough and cold meds due to concerns about their safety.

Saline nasal sprays can relieve nasal congestion and dryness. For infants, suggest using saline drops first to loosen the mucus, then suctioning it gently with a bulb syringe.

Humidifiers and vaporizers work equally well to add moisture to the air...to help ease coughing and congestion.

Topical medications(Vicks VapoRub, Mentholatum, etc) help with cough and congestion. Inhaling the oils creates a sense of improved airflow.

Use these sparingly and then cover it up with a shirt to prevent the oils from being spread to their child's eyes or mouth. Don't use these in kids under 2, instead use a camphor-free product such as Vicks BabyRub .

Honey can relieve cough...by increasing saliva which coats the larynx and relieves irritation. Use one-half to 2 teaspoons. No honey for kids under under 1 year...they lack the gut flora to protect against botulism.

They say its not good to give children medicine anymore. But, you know what sometimes they need it. Vicks Vapo Rub for kids is very good, and I read somewhere putting it on the bottom of their feet and then socks is good. I always do the chest rub. Robitussin is the best, and also Children's Tylenol Cough - it helps with the cough and the tylenol helps with fever and inflamation.
