Lose weight.

Although obstructive sleep apnea is more common in people who are overweight, it is by no means limited to those who are heavy. It is caused by a tendency of the major airways to collapse, especially during sleep, which results in hypoxia, oxygen deprivation, inability to breathe until the airway is again opened, and it puts the afflicted person at significantly increased risk of sudden death.

Losing weight may help, but will not cure this condition. There is no permanent cure.

Persons with obstructive sleep apnea should, in general, use some sort of a positive-airway pressure machine (CPAP or BiPAP) when they sleep, and the positive pressure maintained in the airways by such a machine keeps the airways open and prevents the episodes of obstruction.

There is currently no proven drug therapy for sleep apnea. However, there are 4 basic approaches to treatment which are not mutually exclusive:

1. Modification of circumstances which may be causing sleep apnea
or making it worse. This would include:

weight loss
avoidance of alcohol and sedative drugs
trying to sleep only on your side
stopping smoking
avoid sleep deprivation

Good Luck:

What S.P. said: Sometimes you never do.

It could be that you need to lose weight. It could be that you need your adenoids or tonsils removed, or even something as simply as a new pillow and mattress to support you properly.
