My brother attacked a cabbie at knife point. They fought over the knife and the cabbie was injured on the hands requiring surgery. He ran from the police and hid until his wife took him to the hospital where he lied and said he blacked out and fell over a curb. His wife called my mom and told her what really happened. Neither of the two would do anything so I called the police and turned him in. He has gotten really bad on crack and steals even from the family and has been in treatment it seems forever. Now with this step he has moved up and I was worried about my mom and my own family. Did I do the right thing?

Just a few more details...I am 44 years old and my brother is 36. Last Christmas we were burying my other brother who was 30. He was a crack addict and his live in girlfriend( also an addict) poured gas on him and set him on fire. I love my brother and I felt that if he had nothing to lose he may kill someone before he was caught or even kill himself. This was the toughest choice I have ever made in my life and in my heart I think it was right.

I think you did. You made an extremely hard decision, but I think you did it right.

As a member of the law enforcement community I'm sure they appreciated your input, but as a brother, I have difficulty reconciling the fact that you turned in your own brother...as a first option. This doesn't mean you're wrong, but it was not the behavior I would normally expect. Still, dealing with an addict is a daunting task, so your judgment had to prevail. I hope this experience will lead to treatment for your brother and the well-being of your entire family. Happy Holidays.

Scooter, you did the right thing. Your brother does not see family anymore he sees his addiction, and sometimes it takes someone in the family to have the courage of a lion to recognize this. IF you allow him to continue with this behavior he will destroy the whole family.

I made this same decision with my sons father and let me tell you it was one of the best one ever because had I keep allowing his addiction in my life I would have nothing to give my son except a pattern of drug abuse to follow.

Just remember if anything happens to him it has nothing to do with you. He choose to live the life that he is living and must deal with the consequences.

hope this helps

You did the right thing but don't expect him to change. He is an addict who doesn't want to get well. Hope he goes to jail for a long, long time so you can grow up and get free of the life you are in. Good luck, you will need it.

i understand that you feel guilty because he is your brother but you did the right thing and dont let anyone tell you different. sometimes in life we are faced with difficult decisions and we have to just do the right .... your brother needs help with his addiction and that should be your next step, help him anyway you can even if he hates you for turning him in

I personally feel that you did the right thing. Not only are you probably saving others from harm but you are, in fact, saving him from himself. He needs help and probably the only way he will get it, is by having his addictions curtailed.

It is very sad that drugs create such horrible consequences.
If and when, they get drug free, they themselves will be horrified at what they did while under the influence.

Yes you did. Criminals need to be taken off the streets no matter who they are.
