The traditional starter for any virgin of chinese food, particularly if you're an american is actually,... Chow Mein Noodles, a side of rice & saute vegies.
Nothing too extreme to overwhelm your palate.
Eventually when you get a little more confident, go ahead and explore the other suggestions the others have made. Some of those dishes can be a little too elaborate as well as very spicy/exotic
** (especially when you are ordering Chinese in a Chinese restaurant, but the Cooks aren't Chinese; For example in Detroit its difficult to get good Chinese Food, one place I learned the cooks were Laotians - which isn't exactly Chinese. And another place was entirely staffed of Anglos - the 2 head cooks were Polish, the only Asians in the place were the non-Anglo-customers.
Different Asian Cultures have distinct styles of cooking, when in doubt they improvise along their own cultural experiences.
cheers babe!!!

I will recommend you to go to a nice and crowded Chinese restaurant (crowded with Chinese of course) and look around to see what dishes mostly are ordered - then ask the wait staff to give you some hints about the ingredients and tastes and .. enjoy your food!!!
That's what I usually do when I go to new places to "hunt" for good food.

Go to a good-quality Chinese restaurant, not a place where they serve fast, greasy food. Many people who aren't familiar with Chinese cooking will probably like orange-peel chicken, chow mein, or cashew chicken. You might want to ask the restaurant which dish is the most ordered; that will probably be one that you will also like.

There are many different choices on Chinese. I always get the General Tso's chicken because it has good flavor and texture. But if you're not a chicken person, definitely get chicken fried rice. Although it sounds bad they're both excellent choices.

The first time I had chinese I had the sweet and sour chicken, but I had the sauce on the side, just in case. Now I love it and have expanded my taste. I think my favorite now is the chicken mei fun.
