I have never had asthma before and I am 26. I started having trouble breathing, (yes I am a smoker but I plan on quitting new years) tightness and wheezing. Well, went to ER and they put me on a breathing machine, did an EKG and chest x-ray, said it was Reactive Airway Disease. They gave me a provental inhaler and put me on Prednisone at 60mg for five days. The Pharmacists said that it is okay to just stop after the five days but it worries me, they never said anything about tapering off, and it is not on the prescription bottle. anyone else had this experience, I have had this weird chest stuff for two weeks now and the inhaler only works a little, what could have all of a sudden brought this on?

I have severe asthma. Actually, I'm just finishing up a 7 day round of prednisone. The taper for prednisone is needed for longer term use (the suggested start point for a taper now is 10 days according to my pulmonologist).
As far as your inhaler only working a little.... are you using a spacer?
(If you aren't familiar with what a spacer is, it's a plastic chamber that temporarily helps to suspend the medication, allowing you to breath it in deeper and more effectively).

Spacers: http://www.asthma.ca/adults/treatment/spacers.php

Prednisone:
(these sites are marked for those with arthritis, but prednisone dosages talked about on them are the same).

I wish you luck in quitting smoking! It's not easy, but it can be done. Just stick with it. Quitting smoking is one of those things, if at first you don't succeed, try try again! I quit a few times, finally (fingers crossed) done for good!!

I have been on prednisone several times, but for much longer periods. Prednisone supresses the adrenal glands which produce steroids with effects similar to prednisone, only at much smaller amounts. If a person is on prednisone for an extended period, the adrenal glands stop producing steroids, and it takes more than a few days to start back up when prednisone is stopped. Five days is a relatively short time, but 60 mg is a pretty big dose. You are not at risk of any serious problems from stopping abruptly after five days, but you might feel some withdrawal symptoms. If you are worried, you can save your last pill - split it in half and after pill number 4, take 1/2 pill the next day, skip a day, and then break the pill in half again, take another, skip another day, and take the last one.

You can also call the pharmacy and ask them about the risks or ways to taper.
