And if we do, is this a spiritual sort of thing? I'm of English-Irish descent; Leech is a family name. In keeping with the subject, I welcome serious, thoughtful answers.

You come from a family of doctors?
Historically, soil and climate were an influence. eg Peat and mountain streams in Scotland for whisky. England had no native spirits until gin was copied from Holland.
The Irish reputation for heavy drinking comes from the 'navvies' immigrating to England to build canals in 18th C. Hard manual labour requires drinking a lot of liquid, and water was then often unsafe.
Today, the English excell at public drunkenness.
By contrast, Americans poison themselves with iced water.

"Beer! happy produce of our Isle
Can sinewy strength impart
And, wearied by fatigue or toil
Can cheer each manly heart.

Labour and Art, refreshed by thee
Successfully advance
We quaff thy balmy juice with glee
And water leave to France."

And by spiritual, are you referring to the "spirits"?

Historically speaking, a LOT of alcoholic drinks originated in that part of civilization.

I have a friend who's half Irish, half German -- he swears he'll die with one in each hand, a Guinness and a Leinenkugel's. I keep telling him the Leinie's is brewed in Wisconsin, but he doesn't care.

poles drink far more often and more heavily than the irish. they are also better catholics (there has never been an irish pope).

the irish imagine themselves heavy drinkers because they live nextdoor to the english and the welsh - two of the most moderate races in europe.

of course the real reason english and welsh men aren't as fond of a drop as their irish neighbours is because welsh and english girls are so pretty that brewer's droop is a tragedy.
